Osteoporosis and osteopenia have complex causes. At The Osteoporosis Education Project, we have developed a comprehensive 10-Step Program for maximizing bone health, beginning with adequate nutrition. Adequate intake of nutrients as well as the proper acid-alkaline balance is essential to bone health.

We are also rethinking the causes of osteoporosis and osteopenia. Adequate levels of many minerals and vitamins are essential, including calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, boron, vitamins C and E. A surprisingly large number of us are also deficient in vitamin D, which is essential for calcium absorption. On the other hand, high doses of vitamin A and excessive calcium intake are shown to hinder bone health. Further, an overlooked yet leading cause of both osteoporosis and osteopenia is chronic acidosis; therefore, the proper balance of alkaline and acid is essential. Within this website, you will find Dr. Brown's research on acid-alkaline balance and bone.

The Complexity of Osteoporosis
Excessive sugar, fat, coffee, protein, and alcohol also damage bone, yet people who drink one or two alcoholic drinks a day can have better bones than nondrinkers, and low protein intake is just as damaging as excessive protein intake. Strong medications such as steroids are also known to cause damage to bone, and new research shows that even non-steroidal pain killers also damage bone by delaying the repair of fractures. If you know you have poor bone health, Dr. Brown can help you treat the problem and prevent osteoporosis.

Each step in her 10-step program is life-supporting in itself. She believes that building better bones helps you to build a better body. Everything you do for your bones can be good for the rest of your body as well. To schedule a consultation for an individualized bone health program, contact Dr. Brown today.
